What Are Control Arms?
The core of a vehicle’s front suspension system, control arms are the link that connects the front wheels to the car. Designed to allow the vehicle to turn and pivot, one end connects to the wheel assembly and the other end connects to the framework of your car.

Toyota parts are $220 per side from the local dealer, so I'm willing to give Moog a shot at $100 a pair.
You can totally do the job by yourself with pretty basic tools. Save yourself the shop's labor and 100%+ markup on parts, and learn about your car. I did this job in my driveway and it took about ninety minutes a side.
Installation was straightforward and did not require power tools, however it did take some effort and a bit of patience. Other Matrix/Corolla owners have reported that the transmission mount must be undone and the automatic transmission jacked up in order to remove one of the through bolts, but my standard transmission left plenty of room. I did have to separate the steering knuckle from the strut in order get the new part in: if you do this, be sure to unbolt the wheel speed sensor from the knuckle(follow the wire down to the knuckle and remove the single bolt, then move the sensor out of the way) and support the knuckle in some way so that the brake hose doesn't bear all of that weight. I rested the knuckle on my floor jack and rolled it forward to make more room to get the new control arm in.
You'll have to start with the rear end of the arm. That takes a bit of wiggling; once you get it in place run the bolt up and start the nut otherwise it will be more difficult to get started later. Next, swing the front end inward. This also takes some work and I had to tap the arm into place with a mallet once I got it started. Get that through bolt started as well, then work the new arm onto the lower ball joint and reinstall the knuckle to the strut. Reinstall the wheel speed sensor and torque everything down, then put the wheels on, torque the lug nuts, and *have the car aligned* because you have changed all of the suspension angles by disconnecting the various parts.
Minimum tools required: floor jack and two jack stands, various ratchet drives, 10mm deep socket(for wheel speed sensor bolt), 17mm socket(for lower ball joint nuts and bolt), 19mm socket(for control arm through bolts) and 19mm wrench(for counterforce on the nut), 21mm socket(for lug nuts), 22mm socket(for strut-to-knuckle through bolts) and 22mm wrench(for counterforce on the nuts), torque wrench with range at least up to 162ft/lb, 30" pry bar for working parts in and out of place.
I used a 3/8" breaker bar and air ratchet to loosen and remove most of the fasteners - the through bolts are very long and it was nice to have the air ratchet instead of cranking on a ratchet to get them out. Aside from that and the lug nuts, I don't feel that air or power tools would've made the job any easier. Good lighting is critical if you're working indoors or at night(like I did - I spend as much time trying moving the trouble light around as I did turning wrenches).
You're working on your car's steering and suspension and carelessness can be deadly - just double-check yourself and be conscientious about torque values. Good luck!
